It is a fairly common, well-known fact within the tech consumer community — Apple doesn’t do things first. It does them last — and then makes everyone forget the wait. And while this has been true for most of Apple’s new product launches over the past decades, it is more or less true again — as we witness the iPhone Duo — Apple’s debut into the foldables category.
Five years late. Deliberately.
Samsung shipped its first Galaxy Fold in 2019. Since then, the foldable market has been a parade of ambition and compromise — creased displays, fragile hinges, software that never quite knew what to do with the extra screen real estate, and price tags that felt like punishment for being an early adopter.
Apple watched all of it. And waited.
The iPhone Duo features an approximately 5.5-inch outer display that unfolds into a 7.6-inch internal screen with a wide 4:3 aspect ratio — closer to a small iPad than a stretched phone. This form factor — though Samsung launched earlier this year — is something that industry insiders say Apple forced companies to follow. And that design choice is not accidental. Apple isn’t building a taller phone that folds. It’s building a device that is genuinely two things at once: a pocketable phone and a portable canvas.
The displays also feature ProMotion, Always On, and 3000 nits of peak outdoor brightness. Later this year, iPhone Duo will support Apple Pencil with USB-C, allowing users to take notes, sketch, or mark up documents on either display.
Inside is the A20 Pro chip built on a 2-nanometer process, 12GB of RAM, and a battery rumoured at 5,000–5,500mAh — larger than any previous iPhone. MagSafe is supported, which contradicted earlier reports suggesting it would be dropped due to the device’s unusual construction.
The trade-offs Apple made
Here’s where it gets complicated.
Face ID is gone. In its place is a side-mounted Touch ID sensor in the power button — a regression for anyone who has used Face ID daily for the past several years. The telephoto camera is also absent. The iPhone Duo ships with a dual-lens rear camera system, meaning the zoom capabilities that Pro users have taken for granted since 2019 simply aren’t here.
These aren’t minor omissions. They are meaningful downgrades relative to the iPhone 18 Pro Max, a device that costs roughly half the price of the Duo’s top configurations. Apple’s justification, implicitly, is that the form factor is the feature. Whether that reasoning holds up in daily use is something reviewers will stress-test in the coming weeks.
And…the Price
iPhone Duo starts at $1999 for 256GB variant. It is available to order from October 16 and available on stores starting October 23.
